Pulp vs. Plastic Egg Cartons: What Poultry Farms Need to Know

Transporting eggs requires a delicate balance of protection and cost. Poultry farms across the United States use both molded pulp trays and plastic egg crates depending on their operation size, buyer requirements, and sustainability goals. Understanding the trade-offs between the two helps you make the right call for your farm.

Molded pulp trays, also called fiber flats or egg fillers, are made from recycled paper and are the most widely used format for commercial egg transport. They are biodegradable, compostable, and accepted by virtually every grading station and packer in the country. Pulp trays provide excellent shock absorption through their molded cell structure, and they breathe naturally, which prevents moisture buildup under the eggs during refrigerated transport. The main limitation of pulp is that it is single-use in most operations, though some large farms do run wash and reuse programs.

Plastic egg crates are reusable, which is their primary advantage. A quality plastic crate can be sanitized and reused hundreds of times before it needs to be retired, which lowers the per-use cost significantly over time. Plastic crates also perform better in high-humidity environments where pulp can soften. However, plastic crates require a return logistics system, sanitation equipment, and tracking, which adds operational complexity that is not practical for smaller operations or those shipping long distances.

For most commercial egg farms selling through standard distribution channels, molded pulp remains the preferred format because it requires no return system, fits standard master case dimensions, and meets retailer and distributor specifications. Plastic crates make the most sense for farms with a closed-loop delivery system, such as farms supplying a single processing plant or distributor with regular return routes.

Supply Carton stocks 30-count egg filler flats in standard gray pulp and can source plastic crates for operations that need them. Contact us at (469) 489-4999 for pricing and availability.
