How to Choose the Right Corrugated Box for Your Produce

When it comes to shipping fresh produce, the corrugated box you choose is as important as the product inside. The wrong box can lead to bruising, moisture damage, and costly shrink before the product even reaches the shelf.

There are several key specifications to evaluate before placing a box order. Box strength is measured in two ways: Edge Crush Test (ECT) ratings measure stacking strength, which matters most for palletized freight. A 32 ECT box is the standard for most produce applications. Mullen Burst ratings are better for rough handling and single-package shipping. For most growers shipping on pallets, ECT is the more relevant measurement.

Flute type also plays a major role. B-flute offers good puncture resistance in a thinner profile. C-flute provides superior stacking strength and is the most common choice for produce boxes. Double-wall BC flute is ideal for heavier items like watermelons and pumpkins where extra rigidity is needed.

Produce boxes are often exposed to refrigeration, ice, and high humidity during transit and storage. Look for wax-coated or water-resistant treated boxes if your product will be in wet or cold environments. Standard untreated boxes lose significant strength when wet and can collapse under pallet weight.

Many fresh produce categories benefit from ventilated boxes that allow airflow and extend shelf life. Our produce boxes are available in standard and ventilated configurations.
