The Dallas Manufacturer’s Guide to Agriculture Packaging: Protecting Texas Produce
Texas agriculture operates under some of the most demanding environmental conditions in the United States. From the high humidity of the Gulf Coast to the blistering summer heat of North Texas, the journey from field to distribution center can destroy produce packed in the wrong box. Choosing the right agriculture packaging is not just a cost decision ? it is a quality and liability decision that affects every load you ship.
The most important variable for Texas produce is temperature management during transport. Most Texas crops move through refrigerated trailers, but the loading and unloading process exposes boxes to ambient heat and humidity that can cause condensation inside the trailer. Waxed boxes are essential for any crop that is top-iced, hydro-cooled, or packed in high-humidity conditions. Watermelons, cantaloupes, peppers, and leafy greens all benefit from wax-coated boxes that maintain their structural integrity even when wet.
For root vegetables, dry grains, and crops shipped in ambient conditions, standard corrugated RSC boxes with a 32 ECT or higher rating are appropriate and more economical. The key is matching the box specification to the crop and the cooling method, not simply buying the cheapest box available in the right size.
Stacking strength is the second major consideration for Texas produce operations. A full pallet of watermelon bins can weigh 2,000 pounds or more. If you are stacking two or three pallets high in a warehouse or trailer, the bottom layer of boxes must support enormous compressive loads. Double-wall and triple-wall corrugated options provide the strength needed for heavy crops, while standard single-wall construction is appropriate for lighter items like leafy greens and herbs.
