Understanding Box Dimensions: Interior vs. Exterior Measurements
If you have ever ordered boxes online and been surprised when they arrived because your product did not fit, you are not alone. Box dimensions are one of the most common sources of confusion when buying packaging supplies for the first time. The key distinction is between interior and exterior measurements, and understanding which one you are looking at can save you from a costly mistake.
The standard convention for listing corrugated box dimensions is Length by Width by Depth, always in that order. Length is the longest opening dimension when the box is open. Width is the shorter opening dimension. Depth is the height of the box when it is fully assembled and standing upright. This L by W by D format is used consistently across the packaging industry.
Most corrugated box dimensions listed by suppliers, including Supply Carton, are interior measurements. This means the numbers represent the usable space inside the box, which is what matters for fitting your product. The exterior dimensions will always be slightly larger due to the thickness of the corrugated walls. For standard C-flute single-wall boxes, add approximately 3/8 of an inch to each dimension to get the exterior measurement.
This distinction matters in several practical ways. Shipping rates from carriers like UPS and FedEx are calculated on exterior dimensions for dimensional weight pricing, so your shipping cost estimate should use exterior numbers. Pallet configuration planning also depends on exterior footprint to calculate how many boxes fit per layer. For product fit, always use interior measurements and leave at least half an inch to one inch on each side for void fill or cushioning material.
To find the right box size, measure your product at its widest points in all three dimensions. Add one inch to each dimension to allow for cushioning, then look for a box with interior dimensions that match or slightly exceed those numbers.
